Hi Paul,

The mark reads "Chenghua Nian Zhi" (Cheghua period made) but your item is not from that period.

Can you provide a photo of the entire piece? These types of marks are late 19th Century at the earliest with many later reproductions.

Anything earlier than contemporary with a faux Ming mark of the Chenghua reign like yours would more likely have looked like this pair, which date to the Guangxu Period (1875-1908). In my opinion, anything with such "understated" decoration meant for export from China would've had a hard time finding a market in the West until the late 20th century. Perhaps Pier 1 or another Asian Import store brought these in for decorators.
