Hongmu and Dali marble

This marble table screen is a classical example of shihua (stone picture). Finely veined Dali marbles were sought for by collectors and scholars because of their resemblance to the natural world and in the meantime to Chinese ink painting (shanshui painting).
The inscription reads: “song shan bai yun” which can be translated as “white clouds on the Songshan mountains” - Songshan mountain is located in Henan Province and is one of the five sacred mountains in China. Unfortunately the artist seals are not readable.
